King of the Cheese Sandwich

Not a great deal happening in the village this week, but I did wonder if you’d like to meet Jason?(Community Hall Door Management and Cheese Sandwiches) 

He’s quite quiet and very kind, but is built like a brick outhouse. When Mrs Nugget has taken one sherry too many, which is to say, any number after two, Jason has the gentle habit of appearing at her elbow and guiding her into a chair at the back of the hall with the quiet efficiency of a man accustomed to moving furniture.

A while ago, last year possibly, Jason went on holiday which surprised everyone, including Jason I think. He went to Protaras in Cypress which he described as sunny, civilised, and with good grilled fish, and stayed for a lot longer than the 2 weeks he told Mrs Nugget.

What he did not initially mention was that he had gone with a friend, Andreas, who lives there. He runs a bar in nearby Ayia Napa, where the nights are loud, bright, and full of people who believe dancing on tables is a sensible life choice.

Jason, it must be said, does not dance on tables. He’s more like a granite statue in a room of glitter.

Jason has now returned to the village for a while, which in rural terms, could mean anything between three weeks and the remainder of his natural life.

He says he has “a few things to sort out.” No one is entirely sure what these things are, but Mrs Nugget is keeping him busy with a few jobs.

• reorganising the Hall’s emergency exit signage

• locating a missing biscuit tin from the 2021 Harvest Supper

• re-hanging the “Fire Exit” sign that has been pointing confidently at the ladies’ toilets since 2018

Privately, she hopes he stays. The Community Hall door has never felt quite so secure as when Jason is leaning beside it with his arms folded and the calm expression of a man who knows exactly where the spare keys are.

Anyway, Andreas is visiting the village very soon to talk things through. The village will, I suspect, have views, but we wait with bated breath.
