To my Esteemed Members of the Council,
It is with measured enthusiasm (and a fully cross-referenced itinerary) that I propose a Parish Council charabanc visit to Leamington Spa, hereafter referred to as The Expedition.
Many Tudor historical sites can be found in Warwickshire: Warwick Castle - Henry visited in 1511. and 1541; Lord Leycester Hospital - Elizabethan era architecture and hospital for the poor founded in 1571; Nearby Stratford upon Avon including Shakespeare's schoolroom and Guildhall, but we will be concentrating on Leamington Spa
While Leamington is not known for it's Tudor heritage, and is commonly regarded as a Regency town of baths and polite promenading, it is my professional opinion that no English landscape is entirely free from Tudor consequence. The Pump Rooms, though later in construction, sit within a nation profoundly shaped by Henry VIII’s administrative restructuring. It would therefore be negligent of us not to observe them.
The proposed visit will include:
-
A guided promenade through the town centre (pace calibrated for contemplation).
-
A structured pause at the Pump Rooms to consider questions of monarchy, mortality, mineral water and disease in the Tudor period. The mineral springs have been used since the middle ages; unfortunately the boundary between cure from the waters and death was at times distressingly thin.
Attendance at the Tudor production in Jephson Gardens, in which I shall be portraying Thomas Cromwell during the Anne Boleyn period; a role requiring nuance, restraint and, at one point, controlled indignation. I would be delighted should you wish to join me.
Logistical Framework
I have prepared:
-
A colour-coded itinerary (green for promenade, burgundy for Tudor significance, blue for tea).
-
A laminated timetable (weather-resistant).
-
A risk assessment for Sudden Cromwellian Intensity.
-
A contingency plan if we get stuck in traffic
Transport will depart at 09:17 precisely. I have selected this time for symbolic neatness The year 1517 is when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses but of course, leaving at 3.17pm is too late to cover all items on the itinery.
Notes on provisions and weather
Optional Tudor-themed refreshments will be available, including:
-
Marchpane (structurally sound and quite filling).
-
Spiced biscuits (price permitting, but Mrs Nugget will investigate with Sharon).
-
A historically suggestive but modernly hygienic meat pie.
Members are encouraged to dress for variable English weather and potential pageantry. Cloaks are not compulsory of course, though I shall not discourage them. Sensible shoes will be required.
I remain, as ever,
In service to precedent and punctuality,
Mr Humphrey Bellweather
(Local History, Tudor Specialist, Acting Cromwell)
